The Layers feature in the SEE module provides a comprehensive set of options allowing users to enhance situational awareness through visual overlays (Context layers) on the map, changing map styles or how data is displayed. Many more context layers are coming soon.
Layers can be found at the bottom left of the screen. Click to view all available options.
Map Layers
Severity Layer
The Severity Layer visually represents the frequency of events in each country by changing the country's color based on the number of occurrences.
Clicking on a country provides a detailed breakdown of events in the past 90 days by severity, ranging from low to major, and a categorization of these events.
This layer is continuously updated to reflect the latest event data and alert levels.
Threat ratings layer
The Threat Ratings Layer provides a forward-looking assessment, projecting where a country’s threat landscape is going over the coming months.
By clicking on a country, you can access a summary and a spider graph illustrating the breakdown of risk and threat ratings. This layer is typically more stable and is updated quarterly, with the date of the last update visible.
For the full country analysis click the link "...read detailed report here" or find it in UNDERSTAND > Country Assessments.
Event Mode
Group / Single
by default we group same events - be it updates by the same providers or reports from several providers on the same event - to reduce/avoid duplications for more clarity on the map and valid data analysis (e.g. heatmap, severity layer). Hence, one maker can be a group or one event listed in event list. You will see whether a marker or listed event represents a group when they show several source icons.
Still, if you wish to see or export all reported events separately as a marker or listed event choose "Single" mode.
Event Visualization
Heat Map
The Heat Map feature provides a visual representation of event density using a color gradient ranging from red to blue.
This color-coding allows users to quickly assess and interpret patterns of activity across a city or region, helping to identify critical areas that may require attention or further analysis. The Heat Map is a powerful tool for enhancing situational awareness by providing an at-a-glance overview of where events are most concentrated.
It is calculated based on the total number of events in your viewport (on screen), hence the visual changes with different zoom levels.
Map Tools
Route
The Route function on the platform allows you to plan and visualize specific travel paths or transportation routes between two or more locations on the map. This feature is especially useful for monitoring critical supply routes, the safety of travel paths, the availablility of evacuation routes, or assessing potential risks along the way. Once a route is defined, you can further enhance your situational awareness by converting it into an "Interest" and setting up alerts for any events that might impact the route.
Example: Creating a Route from Alexandria to Cairo
Step 1 - Define the Route: To create a route from Alexandria to Cairo, open the Route tool and enter your starting point (Alexandria) and your destination (Cairo). The platform will display the suggested route on the map.
💡 You can adapt the proposed route to e.g. alternative, safer roads by dragging the visual to the desired road.
Step 2 - Convert to an Interest: Once you've selected the preferred route, you can convert it into an "Interest" by saving it within the platform. This allows you to keep the route visible on your map for continuous monitoring.
You may wish to add the tag of other related interests to group them easily into one view or alert.
Ready! Now you can see your route as an interest.
💡 Use Tip
After converting the route into an Interest, you can set up an alert to receive notifications about any relevant events that occur near this route.
For example, you might want to be alerted to protests, roadblocks, severe weather, or any other incidents that could disrupt travel between Alexandria and Cairo.
